Intro
When most of us think about pop punk, we immediately think of Green Day and Blink-182. It’s easy to do because those are two of the most commercially successful bands in the pop punk genre.
We may think of all pop punk sounding the same-guitar/power chords with upbeat melodies and lyrics about suburbia.
While that’s still at the root of many pop punk songs, many artists have found ways to make the pop punk that we know and love sound different. Enough artists have done this that pop punk can actually be divided into sub-genres.
Today, we’ll discuss three sub-genres of pop punk.
Emo Pop
Upbeat melodies with sad/depressing lyrics is the best way to summarize this genre.
AllMusic defines Emo pop as
…blending "youthful angst" with "slick production" and mainstream appeal, using "high-pitched melodies, rhythmic guitars, and confessional lyrics concerning adolescence, relationships, and heartbreakArtists In This Sub-Genre
Think of this as sad songs that are radio friendly. These are the types of songs that you wanted to listen to when you thought your life sucked, but you lived with two parents in a nice suburban home.

Easy Core
This genre is what you’d get if pop punk and metal had a baby. Catchy melodies with a once-in-a-while scream and breakdown mixed in.
Check out the link to Hawthorne Heights below. Their song Ohio is For Lovers is a great example of some easy core screams.

Neon Pop
This tends to be one of the sub-genres that I listen to most often. Songs of this sub genre usually include synthesizers or other electronica elements.
The songs are usually bright and upbeat and the bands of this genre can be remembered as wearing neon sunglasses, colorful hoodies and deep v-neck t-shirts.

Conclusion
One could argue that there are more sub-genres within pop punk. There are and frankly, one could also argue that there are sub-genres within the three we discussed today.
